My top guitar solo's (Part 2)

Best Seattle Sound Solo

The Seattle sound brought us many new bands, but none as colorful as the Stone Temple Pilots. On their 3rd studio album came a very short and lyrically confusing song called Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart. To this day I'm still not sure what this song is all about but when you hit the solo your brain won't care what the song is about anymore. Honorable mention has be given to Pearl Jam's Alive which might be the classic grunge era song.

Best Return Of Rock Solo

Post grunge, we got back into more traditional rock music and no band was bigger [and badder] than Gun N' Roses. Slash has lay down some memorable riffs over the years but none are as good and commercial as Sweet Child O' Mine. From the opening riff though the melodic solo, this song is all rock, all guns, all the time.

Best From The Guys Who Started It All

When The Beatles came to America in 1964, it was obvious the music had changed forever. They began what turned out to be an unprecedented and perhaps never to be reproduced attack on the ears and minds of the worlds youth. Of all of their songs, Let It Be may not be the one you think of with regards to solos but the subtle solo Harrison adds to McCartney's piano creates an all time classic.

Best Heavy Metal Solo

While heavy metal is usually not my personal taste, Metallica's One as always been a favorite track of mine. Starts slow and soft and over the next 7 minutes it builds to a driving metal riff and solo that will get your blood pumping and your heart racing.

Best Solo That Crossed Into The Street

Aerosmith has had their ups and downs but with their re-release of Walk This Way featuring Run DMC, they got them selves back into the public ear. Not only did this track get the bad boys from Boston back on track, it also helped hip hop find an audience and is the song many have credited with bringing hip hop from the street and getting it on MTV. There is no doubt if this track had never happened, many of urban artist that followed RUN DMC would never had made it.

Best Only-Solo Solo

For all of the classic songs Queen created over the 14 albums they released while Freddie was with us, the bridge between We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions not only fills the "empty" space between the tracks but totally rocks the basic foot stomp and hand clap music. By the way, these two songs are the classic 1-and-1 rock songs and were made to be played together, never apart.

Best Solo That Is Barely There

The Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing is one of my favorite songs because it is so gentle in tone and tempo but oh so complex in riff and beats. When you get to the long solo, you are treated to one of those solo's that feels like the rest of the song was created to fill around. Note: I know the video doesn't include the full end-of-song solo, so go out and get a copy to enjoy the entire sweet solo.

Best Solo To End A Song

No one rocks the ending of a song like Prince does at the end of Let's Go Crazy. The song itself is a great uptempo pop song but the guitar work it simply outstanding. The mid song solo is tight and the crazy guitar work to bring the song to a close is the kind of sound I wish more artist went for because it wraps up the poppin' song so perfectly [as well as this post].

My top guitar solo's (Part 1)

The basic building blocks of a classic rock song includes a first set of lyrics followed by a chorus. Next comes a second lyric set with the expected chorus a second time around. Then comes the bridge from the middle to the end of the song via the infamous guitar solo. Here are come of my favorite guitar shredding solos:

All-Time Favorite Solo

Jimmy Page is considered by some, me included, to be one of the best guitarist ever to lay down a riff and Heartbreaker is the quintessential guitar driven Zeppelin track. The mid song solo breaks the song to a dead stop and while it - and in this case it is a true solo - starts slow and builds to a full band jam leading right back to the back end of the song. Classic.

Best Old School Solo

When the Kinks released You Really Got Me in 1964, it became an instant classic and has been called by some to be the blueprint for rock music that came after it's release. It is the first hit song built around the power cords and features a raspy solo, based on the song Louie Louie, which launched the band. Ironically, the same song helped launch Van Halen some 14 years later.

Best Non-Vocal "solo"

Technically Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover is all solo since there are no lyrics but this track is simply 4+ minutes of Johnson weaving a simple riff with solo breaks. A close second is Eruption by Van Halen which drop into You Really Got Me Now see Best Old School Solo above. I also have to mention Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien because he all music songs are driving and really get your pulse going.

Best Guest Solo For A Non-Rocker

In his meteoric rise to fame during the Thriller days, Michael Jackson was producing hits all over the place in nearly every genre available at the time. The rockingest track he created back in the day was Beat It which featured a searing solo provided by none other then Eddie Van Halen.

Best Acoustic Solo

Days Of The New was one those bands that emerged from the mid-90's alt rock scene. Although they had limited success, their generally acoustic sound made them different then the rest of the artist around back then. Touch, Peel And Stand is by far their biggest hit and it features a delicious acoustic driven solo that makes me wish I could play the guitar.

Favorite Solo On A New Santana Song

I love what Santana has done over his past few albums finding ways to reach a new audience while staying true to his Latin roots. My favorite pairs have been with Chad Kroeger and on Into The Night, Santana shreds so much it sounds like his guitar just actually melt. A close second is Why Don't You & I, which is lyrically superior and nearly as solotastic.

Best Solo From That Song

You know those songs, the ones you know but don't know their name. Crossroads is one of those songs which features Eric Clapton ripping up his guitar for what seems forever. Nicknamed The Slow Hand, you can see why Clapton has always been looked up in the guitar world.

Best Reverse Solo

When you listen to the song Loser by 3 Doors Down, it it begins with this enticing and simple riff that runs the length of the song and really draws you into the lyrics. But about 2 minutes and 30 seconds later 3DD drops into an all out rock solo that completely blows the vibe and tempo wide open. Only to return to the softer melody with an additional toned down solo. The change of pace is just awesome.

Coming tomorrow, part 2...

The future of music?

Not being able to play the drums or piano doesn't stop this guy from creating an interesting song:

With a video camera, some editing software and a few instruments, you could be a whole band, playing each instrument, by yourself. Cool.

I love this 400 billion dollar lawsuit

Chelsea City Council front man Bart Steele is suing because he claims Bon Jovi's song I Love This Town infringes on his copy written song (Man I Really) Love This Team. Steele's song, which is an ode to the Boston Red Sox written in 2004, contains the flowing lyrics:

Now, get up off your seats,
Everybody scream,
Man I really love this team

Steele claims that Jon Bon Jovi had to have heard his song while campaigning in Boston for John Kerry in 2004. Ok. While on the other hand, Bon Jovi's song has this line:

That's why I, love this town

Named in the 400 billion dollar lawsuit are Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Time Warner Corporation. Other defendants include Jon Bongiovi, Richard Sambora, William Falcone, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Fox Television Networks, Major League Baseball & MLB Productions, A&E/AETV, Bon Jovi, AEG Live, Mark Shimmel Music, Vector Management, Island Records & Island Def Jam Records, Aggressive Music & Sony ATV Tunes, Bon Jovi Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Universal Polygram, Pretty Blue Songs, and The Bigger Picture Cinema Co, as well as the owners of every ballpark that the ad at issue was played in, and all of Time Warner's Networks that played the ad in more than 74 countries around the world promoting defendants MLB and Bon Jovi. I guess when your going swing for the fences, you should really swing for the fences.

Back in august, Steele has "restated" his issue and now it is not a stolen lyric but rather that MLB and TBS stolen the idea of his song and used his lyrics to create this promotion:

I can see some of his logic but I'm not sure I can make the leap from his song and his reported shopping of it to the Red Sox and MLB to Bon Jovi recording a song that happens to get used for playoff baseball. I suppose, like most larege scare lawsuits, scatter the blame around enough and some of the companies will pay him, I mean settle this matter out of court.

Is Dada the new iTunes?

Dada.net is now offering DRM-free MP3's from both Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment's catalogs. The songs can be downloaded to any mobile phone, iPod or digital music player and over-the-air MP3 downloads to mobile devices will be available in the next few weeks. Currently their total catalog is no match for iTunes, their pricing just might be. Dada is approaching pricing from the subscription model, as in $10 a month. That monthly fee will give you access to a maximum of 15 tracks that you can download throughout the month. On a per song basis, that is only 66 cents, instead of the traditional 99 cents that you would pay at the industry giant iTunes. Or you could think of it as paying the same as you do at iTunes, but for every 10 songs purchased, you get 5 free. And since Dada is half owned by Sony Music Entertainment, in a sense they are paying themselves as much as 33 cents per song instead of 9 cents they currently get from Apple. If the music industry can find ways to work together like this, they could regain control over their industry instead being at the mercy of Apple, as they currently are.

iTunes, closing it's doors?

The Copyright Royalty Board is due to rule on a proposal by the National Music Publishers' Association to increase the royalty for a song download from nine cents a track to 15 cents. In a preemptive strike, Apple has already announced that there was no way that any of their [new] pricing structures would make money, and that if iTunes did not make money then the site would be shut down. Now I will grant that 66 percent hike in fees is a stiff one [that's what she said] however I find it hard to believe that giving up an extra 6 cents per song would sink Apple's biggest revenue center. Here is a graph showing the length of time it has taken iTunes to go from 0 to 5 billion songs sold:

What I see is a company who has gone from selling 968 to 6,370 songs per day. Even if their profit margin has always been 1 penny, they have 6.5 time more purchases everyday to profit from. Additionally, Apple has an 85 percent market share in online music and, in April, passed Wal-Mart as the No. 1 music retailer in the U.S.

On the other hand, perhaps Apple should close iTunes and allow someone else to enter the market and take over their 2 million songs sold per year market and see if they can make it profitable, using bit torrent as their platform for example. Distributing computing could yet find it's place. Does ELTunes [Ed and Lisa's Tunes] have a ring to it? I think it does...

Piano version of Footloose

At the tender age of 3, Gabriel Greenberg lost his sister to a car accident in 1985. Unable to really look at the items left behind by his big sister, Greenberg typically just didn't look at them until one day back in 2005 he came across a cassette "with a startling cover photograph - this was Footloose. I couldn't stop listening: it was a portrait of 80's love, desire, pain, freedom, and frenzy; of being a teenager in a time of change. By listening, I could step into Jenny's shoes, see things from her vantage point. I could be emancipated by rock and roll and walkmen, just as she had been. We could listen together." Flash forward 2 years where Greenberg asked his friend Thomas Bartlett [a.k.a. Doveman] to re-imagine the entire album with which they "could reply to the past, tell our own story about being young. This is what he made."

With this eerie and haunting cover of the Footloose soundtrack Doveman and company have found a new way to stretch music across genres as well as generations.

Is Guitar Hero the new iTunes?

In it's first week on the shelves, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold over 500,000 copies and at 50 bucks a pop that's a $25 million dollar week for Activision/RedOctane [which I'm sure the Aerosmith boys will see a nice chunk of]. This is quite a change for Aerosmith, given there last album, Honkin' on Bobo, has sold a mere 590k copies since 2004. Ok it's not quite fair to compare one of the hottest gaming platforms on earth and a game that contains an artists greatest hits vs a band's 14th album which contained 11 blues covers and 1 original track however it does ask the question, is GH a new music distribution platform?

Back on April 11th, Motley Crue released their recent Saints of Los Angeles single as downloadable content on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store. In the first few weeks of it's release, the Rock Band version outsold iTunes and Amazon downloadable versions five to one. The news prompted Allen Kovac, of Motley Crue's management company, to comment to Rolling Stone: "Pretty soon, this is going to be the way you sell music."

If the guys at Guitar Hero and Rock Band can find the way to export the music from the console to your iPod, they could become the next big music portal [and help save the record industry from itself].

Amazon sees the future

Amazon opened it's own DRM free music store approximately 10 months ago and they continue to follow the ideals of the open market. Their latest move is to offer "special" deals on albums which can be found on their Deal Of The Day page. This page will update often and currently offers select albums by artist like Madonna, Jack Johnson, Prince, Alice In Chains, New Kids On The Block, Seal, Nine Inch Nails, Metro Station, Julianne Hough, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, and Kelly Rowland - selling between $7.99 and $5.99. Additionally they have the special of the day, which today is We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things by Jason Mraz offered at the low, low, price of $3.99.

If that wasn't enough, the page also includes 8 free singles, most of which I am not familiar with but could be worth the listen. Amazon continues to find new ways to be a market leader, even if they are not Apple's iTunes.

What is Metallica's Mission?

According to reports, Metallica -- in a show of good faith -- invited some music bloggers into the studio to let them listen to six tracks off the band's new album. After listening, the critics wrote up reviews based on what they heard which did not violate any non-disclosure agreements since there weren't any [nor were any specific directions given to them regarding what they could and could not write about]. After the reviews were posted, the bloggers received word from the band's management instructing them to remove the reviews from the site or face legal action because Metallica's management claimed that the songs were rough mixes and had no place in reviews that assumed they were finished products. This is an odd statement since they invited people to listen to these songs who a. review music for a living and use a medium for instant gratification. My guess is the management were simply displeased with the reviews, thus did not want the rest of the cd consuming world to read these kind of early reviews.

In a show of solidarity with my fellow bloggers, I am going to give a quick review of each of Metallica's 8 studio albums, all fully available to anyone who wishes to buy a copy:

1983: Kill 'Em All - I find this album to be unpolished trash rock, where several songs actaully have the same beat and very similar riff's. Honestly not a single redeeming rack on the album.

1984: Ride the Lightning - Most of their second effort follow's the debut formula - washed out and echoed vocals over driving beat with a simple and poor guitar riff. The exceptions are the tracks For Whom The Bell Tolls and Fade To Black, which are good and the only ones worth listening to.

1986: Master of Puppets - With the 3rd album, you can start to hear how the band is beginning to understand production value in music. Although the music is better than the first two albums, no single track is worth buying.

1988: ...And Justice for All - Although this recond contains my favorite song, One, I again find mane of the songs to sound very similar. On a positive note, the title track is also a good listen.

1991: Metallica - Also known as the black album, here is the bands biggest selling record to date [22 million copies worldwide] and hight of their popularity. The album spurned 5 hit singles: Enter Sandman, Sad but True, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, and Nothing Else Matters. If you were going to buy just one Metallica album, this is the one.

1996: Load - Trying to follow in the same style of the wildly popular 4th album, the band produced a very long record [14 tracks running almost 79 minutes]. Unfortunately they one created a fw good songs like Until It Sleeps, King Nothing, and Hero Of The Day.

1997: ReLoad - Originally planned as a double release with Load, the group's 7th album didn't give us anything remarkibly new but did provide another 3 good tracks in Fuel, The Memory Remains, and The Unforgiven II.

2003: St. Anger - On their 8th album, the band infused some newer sounds like ping snare beats with their old school punk riffs to produce a really angry sounded record. I'll pass on all 11 angry tracks.

With each track available on Amazon for $0.99, I would be out a total of $14.85 for my very own 15 track Best Of album. Might be a better choice then there new album due in September, which doesn't seem like it will be ready for prime time [or maybe any good either].

Idol Top 6: The Morning After

The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber? Alright. Words, Words, Words. Kind of an odd statement for a guy known for his composing music but ok. Can the contestants take Broadway songs and, as Simon put it, make them memorable and contemporary? In 1 hour we will know.

Syesha | One Rock & Roll Too Many - Starlight Express

'Bout time they did something with her hair! [The AI stylist must have been reading my blog posts for the last weeks] Loved the song choice and the red dress. I thought Syesha sounded great and this was by far her best performance. I liked the Ricky/Syehsa connection but would have cut the whole singing to the guitar player. It might be so good, she could slide up into the top 3 instead of the perennial bottom 3 where she has been for he past few weeks.

Jason | Memory - Cats

Jason. A rather popular song? Really, with who? This song was over the top too big for Jason's limited range which he seemed lost among the very nice orchestra music. Too bad ALW didn't write a musical about a group of 20-somethings hanging out in a coffee shop all the time - oh wait that was Friends and I'll Be There For You was not an option. Maybe when it's Acoustic-Cover-Of-Over-Played-TV-Theme-Song Week he'll have a better chance.

Brooke | You Must Love Me - Evita

Holy Crap! Forgotten lyric/mis-start? As I said for David A. when he pulled that in week 12, I would call that a season-ender. For most of the song, Brooke sounded ok but at times the music seemed to take over. She did seem to connect with the song but didn't connect with me as a listener. This maybe the week this performance will finally but Brooke out of her misery [and allow me to not go 0-for-3 in Brooke is going home predictions because I'm going to keep putting her down as going home until she actually does].

David A. | Think Of Me - The Phantom Of The Opera

There's no doubt the kid can sing and he sounds like a Broadway star to me [I mean I could never buy a whole album of sappy piano driver tracks from a 17 year old kid]. While I disagree with the judges calling it "Da Bomb" and "Perfect" because I felt the low notes in the middle section seemed a little off key and not nearly as strong as the real big notes of the song. Unfortunately for me, the legions of Archuleta's tweeny fans will keep him around for 4 to 6 more weeks.

Carly | Superstar - Jesus Christ Superstar

I got one word to describe Carly's Broadway week song - ROCKIN! Carly really gave this classic Broadway tune and added a sprinkle of rock and a touch of blues. She is by far the strongest female vocalist of the final 3 ladies and she should reach the top 3. Superstar, Do you think you're what they say you are? [I do] And in a clever PR move, she brought out the very awesome Great Simon Loves Me (This Week) t-shirt. Wonder if the remaining contestants will order there very own after tonight's elimination?

David C. | Music Of The Night - The Phantom Of The Opera

Not so sure of his high notes in the beginning but one he got into the song a bit, he really sounded good. And his big note gave this slow tempo song some much needed punch. Of all of the Idols, this was the only song/performance that I felt conveyed the story element that you would expect when you see at a live musical performance and again David was the man of the week.

Idol Top 7: Morning After

This week Idol takes on the Mariah Carey song book. Sure Mariah has the 160 million cd's sold, 18 number-one singles and 5 Grammy's but can she truly mentor the idol hopefuls? Watching Mariah speaking to the camera and with the Idols, she seemed a little uncomfortable and stiff, which was very odd. The big question is can the girls cover her songs without being compared to the original and can the guys figure out a way to sing her songs?

David A. | When You Believe

Leather Pants? Has David growing up right before our eyes? Anyway, for once I liked that David didn't go all sappy and depressing piano driven song and sang this song very well. His vocals are right on, as usual and this week I have to say I actually liked his performance overall.

Carly | Without You

I liked how she took the song down a little into a deeper voice and she swelled at the end. Being a straight cover, it does pale in the original. On the positive side, I really liked how she looked in the dark dress because I have found her large tattoos distracting.

Syesha | Vanishing

I like Syesha and she certainly has the look of a pop star so I have been hoping she would do well. She sang the song well and she looked great on stage. I would have preferred to hear more lyrics and less runs this week. On a side, I am glad to see the AI stylist have been reading my blog and gave her hair a little spice with some sparkles.

Brooke | Hero

I really love Brookes quirky voice but I'm not sure this was the best song selection for her person style. She again was solid with the whole piano/singer-songwriter vibe but by choosing such a well known song she maybe have been choosing to leave Idol this week. [How sad would it be if this is her last week and she missed her sisters wedding?]

Kristy | Forever

It must be gold dress week. Kristy sang this pretty well however I have to say I felt bored for the entire song. She said she wanted to connect with the song but I think she forgot to connect with the audience. I still have hope she can find a way to make it enough to buy her horse back.

David C. | Always Be My Baby

I liked the arrangement [wonder if he got that from iTunes] but I thought his opening vocals fell flat at times and maybe it was the selection of such a hugely popular song. The mid-point to the end was much better and he continues to a fan favorite. Even if his last few lyrics were nearly inaudible.

Jason | I Don't Want To Cry

Although this is another song in a string of Coffee House tracks by Jason, this one I liked because I felt it was an original take on this Mariah song [unlike the other covers which have been down a thousand times before]. Maybe it was him without the guitar and just putting everything into the vocals instead.

On a whole, Simon was right and the guys did much better than the gals. It seems like songs written for a woman was an advantage for the guys who didn't get the natural comparison.

Julianne Hough's First Single

The 19 year old 2 time Dancing With The Stars Champion [season 4 with Apolo Anton Ohno and season 5 with Hélio Castroneves] has wrapped her first country album, which is due to drop on May 20th. The first single called That Song in My Head was debuted back in March and below is the music video for that song. Idol Top 8: Morning After

In line with Idol Gives Back [tonight 7:30/6:30c, Only On FOX], the contestants were given the task of choosing inspirational songs this week. One question before I get started: Paula, is that a dress or some sort of medieval torture device? Ok so let's see what songs inspire our Idols this year:

Michael | Dream On [Aerosmith]

First Fred "Freddy" Jones of Scooby Doo fame called, he wants his ascot back. As for the song, it felt a little flat to start but was strong at the end. How did he hit those high notes anyway? Not sure this song fits Michael's personal style and unless he can find it, he might not be going much further.

Syesha | I Believe [Fantasia]

Can't they do anything with her hair? Anyway, great, great, great song choice. This is by far Syesha's best performance and I really loved the whole background singer crew in the loft. I've never heard the original version of this song but I guess after the judges gushed over it, I'll have to give it a listen.

Jason | Over The Rainbow [Israel "Iz" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole]

"Blazing Molting Hot"??? Really Randy? I thought it was just ok and I again felt this was just more of the same Coffeehouse Idol stuff Jason has done for the past few weeks. By the way, if you want to hear how that song is supposed to sound check out WBOS at 11:55 AM on any Sunday morning.

Kristy | Anyway [Martina McBride]

A really sweet song for a really sweet girl. Good choice going with a country type track and her outfit looked good too! Perhaps she will be in the top 5 this week instead of the bottom 3.

David C. | Innocent [Our Lady Peace]

Honestly, I didn't get it. Started off all over the place vocally and ended ok. Did he pick this song because he loved it or because he can sing the hell out of it? Probably just a simple personal indulgence this week and though I loved the Give Back writing on his hand. That was quite clever.

Carly | The Show Must Go On [Queen]

I personally love this song [being the last single released before Freddie Mercury's death] and really think Carly can sing almost anything. This however was not her best performance but I thought it was totally good enough to get her through till next week, even if she is in the bottom three. And she did look good, thanks for noticing Simon.

David A. | Angels [Robbie Williams]

Good to see him back behind the piano again but I'm not sure this was a great song choice for me. Started pretty flat and the vocals came together in the chorus and the end. Not sure why I'm not feeling David while the judges drool over him week after week. Maybe it's because I'm not 14 or 80 years old.

Brooke | You Got A Friend [Carole King]

My 1970's house called and it wants it's curtains back. Not sure I like the overall down-tempo arrangement of this song [which is in line with King's version]. JT plays this a bit quicker and think Brooke would have been better served with that style. Not sure how this performance will play out in the vote and Brooked looked very concerned when the judges were granting their opinion.

Least Inspiring Song: Innocent - Our Lady Peace
Bottom Three: Michael, Carly & Brooke
Should Go Home [for last night]: Brooke
Should Go Home [for the whole season]: Jason
Will Go Home: Brooke
