Freedom Writers - A movie review
A young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school. The result was a book called The Freedom Writers Diary and the movie is the story of the making of that book. The film stars Hilary Swank as newbie teacher Erin Gruwell, Patrick Dempsey as her husband, Scott Glenn as her overbearing father, Imelda Staunton as her immediate supervisor and arch nemesis and Robert Wisdom as the supportive superintendent Dr. Carl Cohn. The movie is set in post-Rodney King era Long Beach California and the classroom integration, urban violence and gang influence jumps right off the screen.Two time Oscar winning actress Hilary Swank is the leading actress and at times the leading actor and should win her third Oscar for this role. The character is a strong, sensitive, inspiring, energetic and caring woman and Ms. Swank caries all of those characteristics and more. She filled very big shoes and gave this inspiring story a very believable face. I think this is her best work in her career.
Freedom Writers is one of true to life stories that seem to good to be true and it is handled perfectly including some very hard times for the teacher and students. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and now I can't wait to read through the book that created by those teenage Freedom Writers and one very special teacher.

I want to give a shout out and to say thank you to Ken Williams who is a friend and teacher in California who is being taught the inspirational ideas from Erin Gruwell herself. Ken is learning her techniques and will apply the same ones to his classes in the future. It's teachers like Erin and Ken that WILL make this world a better place, one child at a time.

Thank you for the kind words, I have shared with Erin this blog and she is happy that you and the blog's author enjoyed the movie. This past weekend 20 new teachers were trained in the ways of the Freedom Writers. They are incredible teachers and come from all over the U.S. There will be other trainings between now and January with a planned 150 Freedom Writer Teachers by the end January from all over the U.S. including the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Canada. We are out there in "your" communities doing wonderful and great things every day.
