Randy Moss as a Patriot

The New England Patriots traded their fourth round pick to Oakland for Randy Moss. Yup the Randy Moss who has said publicly he play when he wants to, has been in trouble with the law and had provided some on-field calibrations that we wish he hadn't. [Maybe Randy’s real problem over the past 10 seasons that he has been on teams that have lost much more than they have won.] This seem like a departure from the prototypical player the Patriots would go after however upon closer inspection maybe Moss is exactly the guy they need.

The Patriots have long held the philosophy that they need to build a team and championships first, super stars and stats second. In the 3 super bowl champion seasons, Tom Brady has never had a pro-bowl receiver [and true deep threat] to throw to yet they continue to win. This was done by adding the pieces to the puzzle to better the team. After last season, where the team went 12-4, they continually lacked real receiver threat which at times made them a1 dimensional team. In this off season, the Patriots added new talent at wide receiver and defensive backs addressing their two biggest needs. Adding the pieces to the puzzle.

The last big [6'4"] piece to the puzzle is a tall, fast can-go-deep wide out for Brady to throw to this fall. Wouldn't we all like to see Tom finally have a Pro Bowl season to go with his fourth super bowl ring? How about 4 or 5 pro bowlers from one of the best teams in the history of the game. I say if Moss can bring all of that back to Foxborough and fall inline with the Patriot way then welcome to New England Mr. Moss.

Pot on a Plane

No this is not the sequel to the over-hyped under-performing Samuel Jackson film but rather another incident involving over-rated Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Michael Vick. Yesterday Vick was stopped by airport security in Miami and asked to dispose of his water bottle before passing through security. After much discussion and hassle, he finally disposed of the bottle but the agents noticed it had a particular aroma and subsequently retrieved said bottle and found a hidden compartment with a "residue" which is currently under investigation by the Miami police.

Notice to all air travelers: In our Post 9/11 world, the TSA has a long list of items you can not take on a plane and liquid over 3 ounces is one of them. That includes pro athletes.

One thing that does escape me is my a very public figure who is in the second year of a 10 year/$137 million dollar contract would be concerned with a cheap water bottle and some weed. Why wouldn't he just throw it away and buy some more in Atlanta? I think he can afford it.

For those of you who are looking for your very own water bottle with a compartment, you can buy them online for $30. Although I think I like this home made model better.

Maybe he's smarter than we are and just preparing himself for life after football? Maybe it's all just a marketing ploy?

As seen on tv:

The signature Michael Vick Bottle Safe. But wait you will also receive a complimentary Falcons FU foam finger and you won't even have to pay a $10,000 fine to use it. And if you order in the next 10 minutes you will also receive a venereal disease laden "interaction" with Mr. Vick himself. Operators are standing by so order now!

Is this the end?

Interesting [and potential signs of the apocalypse] stats from yesterday's NFL action:

In a 23 to 14 victory over the Oakland Raiders, Houston's Net Yards Passing [which is total yards passing minus total yards lost due to quarterback sack] was -5 yards. That is not a typo, that is -5 yards. Davis Carr threw for 32 to yards on 7 of 14 pass attempts but was sacked 5 times for a total loss of 37 yards. Who needs positive passing yards to win a game anyway?

In a 23 to 13 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago’s Rex Grossman had a quarterback rating of 1.6 with 6 of 19 passing for 34 yards, 4 rushes for -9 yards, 1 sack for a loss of 10 yards and 3 interceptions. 1.6, is that correct? Is the decimal in the wrong place? Nope 1.6 is how low his rating was for yesterdays game. Luckily the 3 headed monster that is Brad Johnson, Brooks Bollinger and Tarvaris Jackson didn't play much better and the Vikings were unable to capitalize on Grossman's continued downward spiral.

In a 20 to 17 victory over the Mighty Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee's Rob Bironas kicked a 60-yard field goal with 7 seconds left in the game. Vince Young and Company were able to move the ball from their own 25 to the Colts 42 in just 2:25 seconds setting up the 60 yard feild goal. This is the second week-in-a-row the Titans were able to come-from-behind and pull out a victory. Given this is Indy's 2nd loss in 3 games, is this yet another year where they just can not go the distance and win it all?

In a 23 to 20 victory over the new York Giants, Martin Gramatica kicked a 46-yard field goal with 1 second left to win the game for the Dallas Cowboys. Gramatica also hit field goals from 35 and 41 yards out and made both extra point kicks. This is from a guy who was added to the Cowboy's roster one week ago after failed stints with both New England and Indianapolis. The continued success of the Cowboy's and specifically Tony Romo reminds us of the rise of one Mr. Tom Brady - out of nowhere into the spot light. Imagine if Dallas could win it all this year? Drew Bledsoe could watch another replacement, in a superbowl, from the sideline.

Well these might not be signaling the end of time, but one thing is for sure, things are a changing in the NFL.
