Eiffel Tower Getting Facelift

In a joint statement today, the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë and the President of the French Republic Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa announced that the Eiffel Tower will be getting it's first structural change since the original construction was completed in 1889. The plan for the new Chapeau Haut-de-Forme [Top Hat] observation deck have been approved by the Conseil de Paris, Conseil Municipal and Conseil Général. "This is a great day for the City of Paris and will become the tourist destination of the next century" said Delanoë. Construction is planned to begin in September and be completed prior to the tower's 120th anniversary of inauguration, which will be on March 31, 2009.

Here are a few sketches of what the new top floor will look next year.

Can't wait to go back!
