Stop digging into our pockets

The Cash Pike was to be toll less once the original load was repaid and then in 2006 the Turnpike Authority voted to finally eliminate tools completely by the end of last year. Both of these things have not happened yet but instead the Turnpike Authority is looking at implementing a $100 million toll hike to deal with budget deficits and overwhelming Big Dig-related debt.

Their new plan is to re-institute tolls in western Massachusetts and at West Newton. Seems like the Big Dig continues to dig deep into the Western Mass residents. I want to renew my objection to new or higher tolls in the western suburbs to pay for a downtown road project. Why should the residents who live, work and drive the pike 100 miles away pay for the $12 billion dollars the project went over budget? Why not build tolls in the areas that most benefit this engineering marvel? I think a $3 toll in Somerville and Dorchester would raise $100 million in no time.

It could be worse, Wino, they could just tax everyone with a 2% income tax boost. In this case, they are actually making it so that you can avoid the tax by not driving!

You have a great point J-man. I guess the good ol' state of Taxachusetts got used to the money to pay for other things and not just the Cash Pike. This is why I WON'T work in Boston.
