Election Day

Happy November 7 where we decide on a new Governor, re-elect Ted Kennedy and put Wine on the shelves of our local grocery stores. All that is exciting but how about winning 1 million dollars in the process? If Mark Osterloh MD, JD of Tucson has his way, that's exactly what will happen in the next Arizona state election. Osterloh and the team at Arizonans for Voter Rewards have authored a new law, called Proposition 200, that would create a 1 million dollar prize given, at random, to one lucky person who cast a vote in the state election. Under the proposed law, the Voter Reward Fund would receive 20% of unclaimed lottery prizes. Based on a 5-year average, this amount is estimated to be approximately $1.5 million per fiscal year. The unclaimed prize monies are otherwise used to supplement prizes paid to winners of Arizona Lottery games. Hey it might not be legal to give a prize to a voter [which could be viewed as paying for a vote, which is only legal in some countries but not here] but I think it is very creative thinking and I hope it passes so that the legality of it will be debated and maybe, just maybe, we could see the same issue on our ballots here in 2010. Now get out and vote!
